Cavs' West, speeding on motorcycle, arrested with shotgun in guitar case

UPPER MARLBORO, Md. -- Cleveland Cavaliers guard Delonte West was arrested Thursday after officers pulled him over for speeding on a motorcycle while carrying two handguns and a shotgun in a guitar case.

Prince George's County police spokeswoman Sgt. Michelle Reedy said Friday the Cleveland Cavaliers player was arrested about 10 p.m. Thursday.

Reedy said West was riding a Can-Am Spyder motorcycle north on the Capital Beltway in Upper Marlboro when he cut off an officer, who pulled him over.

Police said a handgun was found in his pocket, another in his pant leg and a shotgun in a guitar case strapped to his back.

Reedy said West "was very cooperative, there were no issues" during the incident.

The 26-year-old West, who lives in Brandywine, was charged with speeding and weapons counts. It is illegal to carry concealed weapons and to transport loaded guns in Maryland, according to police. Reedy said West was released on his own recognizance early Friday.

Cavaliers general manager Danny Ferry said the team was monitoring the situation.

"We have been in communication with Delonte and his family," Ferry said in a statement. "We are gathering more information and will not have further comment until the appropriate time."

Online court records did not list an attorney for West.

Last year, West left the Cavaliers' training camp to seek treatment for depression and a "mood disorder" he said he has battled his entire life. At the time, he said he was taking medication and attending therapy sessions. West said his mood problems date to his childhood.

West has said his mood swings seem to be most erratic when his life seems to be in order.

Cpl. Clinton Copeland, a Prince George's County police spokesman, said West was carrying a Beretta 9mm handgun, a Ruger .357 magnum handgun, and a Remington 870 shotgun. Copeland said the penalties West could face if convicted had not been determined.

This is one of the most idiotic things i've heard since the Plaxico Burress incident, these so called stars, celebs, or athletes dont feel that they like all of us regular people need to follow the laws. Delonte has had his fair share of personal and legal problems and this should have been the last thing he did, even though he feels like he his is a true gangster. Not just one gun but three conce ...(more)

I don't know if you realize that the state ran media is always trying to demonize gun owners. There is nothing wrong with owning a firearm. It does not matter a hill of beans what your opinion is on the matter because the constitution of the united states of america expressly gives us the right to protect ourselves with a firearm. How many rich guys , celebrity rich guys, does it take to get shot ...(more)

Just look at this guy, and listen to the way he talks and stuff. He just seems like he has this inner gangster in him, and he just doesn't seem like he is that well educated. I kinda figured this guy would probably get in some kind of trouble sooner or later.

Was one pistol not enough? This sounds like something out of a Tarantino movie; riding down the highway on your jet for a motorcycle, pistols strapped to both legs and a shotgun in the guitar case. Was he preparing for a war? Let's not forget this guy has psychological issues, do you really want to run into a crazed Delonte West ...(more)

Will the NRA help Delonte?  They should reach out to West.  People thnk of Maryland as a nice, safe state; there are some pretty tough areas and maybe Delonte was just steppin out and wanted to protect himself.

It's not like West shot anyone.  Really, is Delonte West going to endanger the public by ca ...(more)

Is Delonte West the only person in the world who doesn't know that if you pass a cop at any time they will pull you, regardless of how well you are driving?

Everyone should know that if a cop is in front of you you need to get behind him in the same lane and stay behind him.  If a cop pulls up next to you at a red

Maybe he was heading home after being at a shooting range.
He was carrying the shotgun legally, he was charged for illegally carrying the two pistols.
But it is hard to put your guns in your trunk when your on a bike.....
Besides, if he was in Ohio he wouldn't have been charged at all, he just happened to be in one of the states with the toughest gun laws.
So if he was in fact

Pro athlete's are the most paranoid people in the world!  I guess he gives a different meaning to a SHOOTING guard.  Speeding = Police + not one not two but three loaded guns + Court appearance = IDIOT!!!!  Most of our laws are hypricritical but what isn't a law in one state is a law in another, so know your laws.

There isn't any logical reason to have 3 guns on you while riding around town.  Maybe if you were out hunting?

But, these athletes don't seem to have an ounce of intelligence at times like these.  What is up with the gun hidden in his pants?  Was he going to rob a 7-11 store?

Don't give me that stuff about being afraid for their safety either.  NBA tea
