Ex-referee Donaghy released from Florida jail

BROOKSVILLE, Fla. -- Disgraced former NBA referee Tim Donaghy is a free man after serving most of a 15-month sentence resulting from a gambling scandal.

Pat Berdan, a consultant working with Donaghy, said Donaghy was released Wednesday from Hernando County Jail in Florida, where he had been held since August after officials said he violated travel restrictions while living at a halfway house in the Tampa area.

A New York judge sentenced the ex-referee in July 2008 after Donaghy said he took thousands of dollars from a professional gambler in exchange for inside tips on games -- including games he worked.

Donaghy, 42, pleaded guilty to conspiracy to engage in wire fraud and transmitting betting information through interstate commerce in the tips-for-payoffs scheme.

Donaghy served 13 months of a sentence that began in a federal prison in Pensacola. He was transferred to a halfway house in June and wound up in the Hernando County Jail in Brooksville after being accused of violating his probation by not showing up for work.

During his stay in prison, Donaghy wrote a tell-all book, Blowing The Whistle, that does not yet have a publisher.

Random House said last week that it had decided not to go forward with publication of the book, which in excerpts posted online includes accusations of wagering between officials working games, favoritism toward star players and desires by the league to extend playoff series.

The NBA has said it will review the allegations that appeared on the website deadspin.com.

Executive Prison Consultants, a consulting agency working with Donaghy, has said the former referee plans to live in the Sarasota area and seek a job in sales or marketing.

Donaghy is desperate at this point and the idea of selling a book on his situation proves it. He sold out on the NBA and made money so why wouldnt he try and sell a book with a bunch of lies in it to make money.  Donaghy is obviously not a credible source but  one would think the NBA would take any alligations he has made about others seriously. They have or should  i ...(more)

Since you were put in the clink you have been singing like a canary.  You are going to have a book come out and have ran your mouth to different media outlets.  Now you are "free" and that should probably be a fairly scary thing to you.  The people you may have snitched on are the type of people who make you look out the window before you leave the house and make y ...(more)

Maybe the SEC cant promise the same help for the gator basketball team as the gator football team got this year. With the damage to the reputation of the NBA caused by Donaghy, I applaud Random House Books for deciding not to publish his book. In the end, it is probable that Donaghy will find another publisher, but I do not think he should profit off actions that caused such harm. Not only did the NBA's reputation take a hit, but now every time there are questionable calls by the referees, one has t ...(more)

(POLL) Obviously this young man is paying a steep price for an addiction that many people have.    I myself enjoy gambling and do it to a degree that many other people would say I have a gambling addiction.   But I now ask the question - what percentage of NBA Refs/Players/Owners gamble on NBA games?   I feel that Tim is taking the fall (similiar to Pete Rose ...(more)

Who cares about the damage to the NBA?  I can't believe anyone would even say that.  They are corrupt.  The NBA is more corrupt than any professional sport and I would believe every corrupted story Timmy has to tell.  He ain't the only one, are you people serious?  It still goes on - the NBA is a sh*t product filled with thugs and corruption.&n ...(more)

So during this recession, we have to give a wealthy NBA referee 3 squares a day in jail because of a little bet.  Why couldn't they just get the total amount gambled, fine him for that amount and in turn he would lose his job.  That sounds like a better punishment to me.

Oh, BTW - Only ONE crooked NBA referee?  You've got to be kidding me!
