Bulls' Thomas breaks arm, could miss 4-6 weeks

DEERFIELD, Ill. -- Chicago Bulls forward Tyrus Thomas broke his left forearm during a weight training session at practice Friday and will have surgery Saturday. He could miss 4-6 weeks.

In four games this season, the fourth-year player from LSU is averaging eight points and five rebounds in 21 minutes.

Thomas, who had been battling the flu, played only 12 minutes in Chicago's victory at Cleveland on Thursday.

X-rays confirmed the injury Friday. Team physicians Dr. Brian Cole and Dr. John Fernandez, assisted by Dr. Mark Cohen, will perform the surgery.

With Thomas out, rookie Taj Gibson is expected to take over as a starter.

The 6-10 Thomas was the fourth overall pick by Portland in the 2006 draft and then had his draft rights traded by the Trailblazers, along with Viktor Khryapa, to the Bulls for the draft rights to LaMarcus Aldridge.

Thomas started to emerge as a player last season when he averaged 10.8 points, 6.4 rebounds and nearly two blocks a game. He made 61 starts and appeared in 79 games for the Bulls.

"He tweaked his arm a little bit and he's pretty sore," Bulls coach Vinny Del Negro said before the results of the X-rays were revealed.

Chicago hosts Charlotte on Saturday.

How is this that big of a deal? He is averaging 8 points , 5 boards and 21 minutes a game. If the Bulls can't make that up, they have more problems than Thomas being hurt. He is a head case and not a very player. And they could of had Aldridge. Grat move there.

That Aldridge for Thomas deal is turning into a nightmare.  I was ecstatic when the Bulls drafted Aldridge and was perplexed when they traded him for T.Thomas.  I figured I'd give it a year or two.  Forget it now.  The Bulls got ripped off.

Wow in all my years of weight training and being a trainer, I have never broken anything or seen anybody break anything while working out. What did he do to break his arm I would like to know. And where was the trainers watching him to make sure he did his exercise properly. Thomas is a joke and now this seals it, get rid of him!!!!

Best of luck to Tyrus Thomas, and I wish him a full and speedy recovery. But why in the hell was he lifting weights if he was sick? I hear about NBA players catching the flu all the time, but I've never heard of a guy breaking an arm on top of it all.
