Grizzlies owner unsure about Iverson's future with team

Memphis owner Michael Heisley says he is not sure of what Allen Iverson's future plans are, though he hopes Iverson returns to the Grizzlies soon.

Heisley granted the 10-time all-star permission Saturday for an indefinite leave to deal with a personal matter. The Commercial Appeal newspaper reported Monday that Iverson is contemplating retirement.

"I'm not in Allen's head. I don't know what he's thinking," Heisley told the Associated Press on Monday.

"I know he went back to take care of a personal problem. Whether he does something else, I don't know. I'm hoping he comes back. I think he could still play for us, somebody else, what have you. In my opinion, there's two, three years of outstanding play that could come out of Allen Iverson."

Leon Rose, Iverson's agent, did not immediately return a message left at his office Monday.

However, Heisley said the 34-year-old Iverson is struggling playing at what the guard feels is less than his previous best.

Iverson, who signed a one-year, incentive-laden deal in September, missed the preseason with a partially-torn left hamstring. He made his Grizzlies' debut on the road a week ago in California, playing in three games at Sacramento, Golden State and in Los Angeles with the Lakers.

Iverson averaged 22.3 minutes coming off the bench, and he hit 57.3 percent of his shots. He averaged 12.3 points per game for the Grizzlies (1-6).

Heisley said he spent two days in California talking with Iverson and hopes his biggest star can get his personal life in order. He would love to see Iverson playing for the first time in Memphis on Tuesday night when the Grizzlies host Portland, but Heisley said he did not put any timetable on his return.

If Iverson returns, Heisley said the challenge for the Grizzlies and the guard is figuring out how to use him to meet the team's needs and those of the veteran. The Grizzlies are young with a roster filled with players like Rudy Gay, O.J. Mayo and Michael Conley who need to start and play to keep growing.

They also need the scoring Iverson can provide. Heisley noted he is the one who pushed for Iverson to sign with Memphis and thinks that can happen once they find the right spot for the guard.

"He is a lock-in to be a Hall of Famer, and that is always difficult for someone who has been at that level to basically maybe to play at less than that level. I'm hoping we can work it out," Heisley said.

From the moment Iverson signed with Memphis, the question has been whether the four-time NBA scoring champ and 2001 Most Valuable Player could be happy coming off his worst season yet. Rumors of what is next have swirled since he flew home from Los Angeles.

Heisley said he won't trade Iverson to get rid of the guard but would if a better deal and fit came up. Heisley thinks Iverson has some decisions to make.

"I'm sure he'll be making them. But I've not had any discussions with him concerning some of the reports or rumors that are going around, that just fly around the NBA with Allen. Somebody with his popularity, it's open season," Heisley said.

All the years that Phily tried to help him become a team player and they failed.  I remember the interview with him on tv  about how good he thought he was and not thinking he had to practice.  Denver tried,  didn't work, Detroit as well, now Memphis and he is playing his poor me games with them.  This guy will never change his attitude "all about me and my stats".&nb ...(more)

I never understood this pairing from the beginning.  Memphis is a young team with any one of 4 guys that can score 20 points on any given night.  Iverson wants to win a championship (and get back at DET for having him come off the bench last season), so he joins a team that went 24-58 the previous season and plays in the West.  Then, after playing in no pre-season games, he is upset ...(more)

Memphis welcomed him like a King when he went there...after all Elvis is gone. Now on a night where it was supposed to be his debut he is nowhere to be found. I feel sorry for the fans in Memphis and especially the ones that bought season tickets based on Ivy playing. Just a self centered childish act Ivy.

I think Cavs would be a good fit for A.I., he needs to be on a winning team and the Cavs needs more scoring if they are serious about winning a ring. I watched some of the games A.I. played in this season and he look very sharp. When he came into the game, it gave the team a huge boost with knowledge of the game that Grizz don't obtain, with assist breaking down Def w/ the dish and scoring! A ...(more)

If he is shooting over 57% and averaging a point every two minutes as this article states, A.I. can still bring it offensively.  So stop "dissin" the man's skills.  Also, HOFers/superstars in this league rarely accept bench roles, and A.I. is the rule not the exception in this regard.  You think Kobe or Lebron will ever take a bench role when they age?  If so, you ...(more)

What will happen after Iverson retires?

1. Will he announce he is broke?

2. Will he get arrested for some kind of illegal activity?

3. Will he star on some reality show?

4. All of the above.

I personally think he will go for the trifecta and get all three of these things done.

Detroit learned the hard way as have all his former teams. He has ALWAYS been about "me" and not the TEAM. He has stated he will not play off the bench and scoring 2 pts a game of 40 pts a game he will retire before he comes off the bench! Good Bye you has been !

Memphis's strength is their guard/wing play. Why did they bring AI in in the first place?

He is not the supportive vet type who enhances a lineup of young players through his wisdom and willingness to play a role.

Iverson is a shell of his former self.  AI was nevber a great shooter..and the last few years he is not even a good player.  The Pistons found that out the hard way.

AI should have quit 2 years ago.
