LeBron says no more free-agency talk until season ends

ORLANDO, Fla. -- Frustrated by the repeated questions, LeBron James said he won't talk about his possible free agency next summer until after this season.

The Cleveland star and reigning NBA MVP said Wednesday night before the Cavaliers' victory over Orlando that all the talk is "getting old."

James cut off interviews after being hit with questions about free agency and teaming with Miami's Dwyane Wade, who has said the two have discussed forming a mega-tandem.

"This free agent talk is getting old. It's getting old and I think I'm going to stop. Tonight will be the last time I answer any more free agent questions until the offseason," James said.

"I think I owe it to myself, and I owe it to my teammates. It's just getting old. I'm focusing on this season, and this is going to be a really good season for us. I don't want anymore distractions for my teammates, for my organization, for my family. This will be the last time I answer a free agent question for the rest of the year."

James can opt out of his contract at the end of this season and become a free agent. He has been overloaded with questions about his plans and has continued to say that winning is most important.

Teams have even been slicing payroll in anticipation of the 2010 summer, when James and Wade are among the All-Stars who can opt out of their contracts. James has never hinted that he would leave Cleveland, about 30 miles from his hometown of Akron.

But he's never said he would stay, either.

Although James insisted that he wouldn't talk about the subject again this season, that doesn't mean he won't be asked. Cleveland plays at Miami on Thursday, and the South Florida media will surely be searching for more answers.

James' method received an early test.

After Cleveland's 102-93 win over the Magic, a reporter asked him if he made the decision to stop answering questions in the spur of the moment or if it was planned ahead of time.

James responded: "Next question."

Wade told reporters earlier Wednesday that the pair have "talked about" going to the same team, a comment the Heat star has floated out before. But that's all it's been - talk among friends.

"It's a long shot, no question about it, it's a long shot," Wade told reporters in Miami. "I mean, I'm in Miami, he's in Cleveland. He's been put in a position in Cleveland where he has the opportunity to compete for a championship now.

"And I'm in Miami, where I've won a championship and this is where I love to be. So it's not like we're both looking over our shoulders, saying, 'I want to get out of here.' It's a long shot, but, at the end of the day, it is a shot."

Let's look at this for a moment.
1. Shaq & Z are in their final year of contractual obligation (31.5M combined salary)
2. We have the option on Leon Powes' 1M.
3. West, Parker are done afer the 2010-2011 (7.25M) (either are trade worthy at season's end)

Let's assume we let Z go, resign Shaq for a 2 year, 16M, which he would possibly take if it meant getting Wade an

I wish I were smarter... like all these posters.  They know what LeBron is going to do.  They all must be rich because they can read the future.  They probably don't even bother to watch games since they already know how they'll turn out.  I don't know what LeBron is going to do.  I don't think he knows what he's going to do.All I know is, I wish I were smarter.

Lets all give a round of applause for the dbag to realize that its a distraction to his team to hear nothing but about his pending moves in the free agency period. Wait, Im wrong, this is Lebron being humble and a swell guy right? Please, this is him just getting more attention and being spoon fed to kids everywhere, but do remember this is the same guy that couldnt give a handshake in true sports ...(more)

I read this somewhere: not sure if it is true but Miami could sign 3 if they were willing to take slightly less than max. How about Wade, Lebron and Bosh?? Now that would be interesting. Jermaine would play for peanuts to play with those guys- he would be back.. Beasely other young guys stepping up- could be a dynasty.

On that note- Its about time Lebron put his team and this season a

Lebron is going to New York.  Cleveland Sucks.  Nobody of any consequence has ever played for a team in Cleveland.  The media hates Ohio sports teams for good reason.  The Big Ten sucks and has never been any good.  Tim Tebow > Tom Brady.  Tim Tebow > Baby Jesus.  SEC Football > Christianity.  That should cover 85% of the CBS Sportline thr ...(more)

Yeah, LeBron is going to a team that is currently 1-7 and couldn't beat my former high school team on any given night. He'll leave a multi-billion dollar owner who will do ANYTHING for him to go to a city where the media will treat him like a piece of crap if he doesn't triple-double every night. I love it!! All you sorry New York fans are so pathetic that you're entire season is spent TALKING abo ...(more)

If LeBron James leaves should all professional sports teams in Cleveland be forced to relocate...It's nice the Browns are a routine two wins for Pittsburgh, but should there be some sort of competitiveness factor..If lebron leaves the Cavaliers will be nothing for the next ...(more)

He's definitely leaving Cleveland...I'd hate to see him in Miami but that is where he would go if he's smart. Plus all the beatiful ladies out there......plus a guaranteed 5 str8 years of championships!
