Power Rankings: LeBron should subtract 10 from retired-number suggestion

Updated Nov. 24

LeBron James says he wants to pay tribute to Michael Jordan by switching over to Bill Russell's number.

Wilt Chamberlain's dominance sparked rules changes long before Michael Jordan ever laced up his high-tops. (Getty Images)

Huh?

Forget what it says on the back, it sounds to me like LeBron is looking for an excuse to print a new name on the front of his uniform next season.

I'm not here to tell anyone where to play. But when it comes to Jackie Robinson-type tributes, let's get something straight:

Major League Baseball didn't retire Robinson's No. 42 because he was the greatest player of all time. It was done to honor the impact he had on the sport -- and sports in general.

If LeBron wants to say Jordan is the MVP of NBA history, he's welcome to do so. But when it comes to changing the game ... please.

No one stands taller than Wilt Chamberlain.

The Dipper was so dominant in his day, rules had to be changed to allow even Russell to be competitive.

Some would say they were good changes -- instituting offensive goaltending and widening the key, for example. Others would argue making Chamberlain stand farther from the basket is akin to permitting a guard only two dribbles per possession.

The point is: Basketball doesn't have to go to the latter extreme, because LeBron can be stopped. Chamberlain couldn't.

Everyone knows about his 100-point game, but here's the true testimony to Chamberlain's dominance: Playing in an era of great centers, he still averaged almost 23 rebounds per game over the course of his career.

Poll
Who is the most dominant player in NBA history?
  7% Kareem Abdul Jabbar

  53% Wilt Chamberlain

  39% Michael Jordan

Total Votes: 5975

That's more than double the number that's getting some of today's big men into the Hall of Fame.

Imagine if Jordan scored twice as many points as the other top players. That would have meant averaging more than 50 a night.

And if Magic Johnson had twice as many assists as other elite ball-handlers. We're talking 20 a game.

Neither -- and in fact nobody -- has come close to such unimaginable figures.

You want to retire a number? Tell Steve Nash, Tyreke Evans and about a dozen other NBAers who wear Wilt's No. 13 to show some respect and try something new next season.

I got an idea: Switch over to No. 23. You know, the guy who has the league changing rules -- allowing his two-step to the hoop this year -- to help him dominate games, rather than bringing him back to the pack.

As a tribute to Chamberlain (OK, and the fact that Pau Gasol's return makes them the best team in the league), I have moved the Lakers -- one of three teams to have retired the No. 13 jersey -- to the top of this week's CBSSports.com NBA Power Rankings.

He has always been a liability for this team when he is injured and when he plays, Jamison is the guy when he goes down this team really suffers. All that money Hibachi gets is for naught, he is turning into Allen Iverson. Great scorer who is me before you. The Wizards compete harder without him. When you are on a losing streak and your top ...(more)

Wilt didn't change anything about the game.......you don't hear anybody talking about him now. He was the only 7 foot center back in his day, playing against a few 6'9 centers....and most of them were 6'6. 6'7.....so there is a reason for that. All he had to do was easily put the ball in the basket. For MJ, he's the 1st and only SG with 6 rings....and the only one to do it everytimehe got there. Y ...(more)

I can't believe I'm saying this, but I truly agree with Del Grande on this one.  For LeBron James to suggest retiring Jordan's number around the league is ridiculous.  I also don't think Wilt's number should be retired.  These players, while truly phenomenal talents, were simply amazing players in the league.  ...(more)

I dont care how many rebounds Wilt had in his career or in any game. 100 points? yeah, the competition was below average? Rings? Changed the game? yeah, he changed the game alright, he changed the chasing tail game. I would say that his claim that he slept with 10,000 women is his best stat. I mean think about it...Id say Wilt started at, lets say 13, and went on until, say, 50. Thats 37 years, div ...(more)

Normally you dont think of a 2 guard as being dominant.  That monicker is usually reserved for the big centers. Notice on the poll that MJ is listed with 2 HOF centers?  Thats how dominant he was.  I have to say that I never saw Wilt play and Kareem was on the downslope of his career when I saw him, but I never heard of the Wilt or Kareem Rules.  Its hard to compare eras b ...(more)

Lebron needs to focus on becoming a legend himself. He has all the tools but yet has to win big, consistently dominate when the game is on the line. He must also stop with all the distractions. Lebron already sees himself as larger than life. You can read this in his musings and his talk and his actions. His flirtation with NYC, this distraction and others- play ball Lebron! Become a legend. Then ...(more)

I've been trying to figure out where LeBron said that the NBA should retire 23.  As I recall in his TNT postgame interview, he said that he was going to switch numbers and try to get other players to - where did he suggest the NBA itself retire the number?  I think he, as a player, was trying to pay homage to the best player ever (probably), and trying to get other players to do the same ...(more)

I AGREE WITH THE WRITER: WILT WAS BY FAR THE MOST DOMINANT PLAYER TO EVER PLAY IN THE LEAGUE.
With that said, Jordan was by far the most dynamic and entertaining player to ever play in the league.
There is a difference.
And considering that there is no way to measure the impact that one or the other would

1) Atlanta - no team is hotter right now.  They're young and will continue to get better
2) LA Lakers - The return of Gasol is huge
3) Orlando Magic - No jameer means more assists for the likes of Carter, Lewis and Williams.  I think they'll play better without hi

Del Grande, do some research. Wilt as great as he was, should've won more (ahem Bill Russell). He didn't because of his selfishness and his ability to disappear in 4th quarters. Never fouled out of a game, you know why, he was afraid to, so he backed off. Translation; he put himself before the team. Check Wilt's 4th quarter stats and witness how Wilt WILTS like a daisy under pressure.

He was perhaps more dominant due to that fact, but Jordan was the best player to lace them up ever.....period.  FYI, I am a white boy....Jordan would have been just as dominant or even better had he played against the competition Wilt was up against....

How can you have a poll of the most dominate players, and not include Bill Russell.  Eight Straight Championships, enough said, and I hate the C's!  Bill Russell is the most underrated player in NBA history, if that is possible

Lets here how many reasons LA shouldnt be ranked No 1, I mean for the most part who cares, but then we have to account for Cavs retards coming on here and making a point to blast the Lakers for something. So, lets hear the reasons, we all know Bos has hit a skid that is surprising, Cle is looking better and the only other team that maybe re ...(more)
