In coach Monty Williams' two seasons, the Hornets have relied on effective team defense for whatever success they have had. Generally, if they hold an opponent to the low 90s or fewer points, they have a good chance to win.
But they played no such defense Saturday night as they lost 108-99 at Memphis.
The Grizzlies were just the second team to score 100 points against the Hornets this season. The 76ers beat New Orleans 101-93 on Jan. 4.
The Hornets' defense bottomed out in the second quarter, as Memphis outscored New Orleans 37-23.
"I think we just dug ourselves a hole too deep that we couldn't get out," Hornets forward Jason Smith said.
The Hornets, 3-9 after losing for the ninth time in 10 games, play host to the Trail Blazers on Monday.
