If the power rankings were based on potential, then the Miami Heat would likely still be No. 1. They still have the highest ceiling of any team, as evidenced by their early season run. Instead, they find themselves with an nine-spot drop after a week that saw them lose to the Warriors, Clippers and Nuggets on a West Coast road trip. The Heat stumbled, choked and sputtered their way out of the top 10 with those performances, and while it may seem like an overreaction, they're just not playing very good ball right now.
As it stands, the Chicago Bulls are the top team and it's not really close, even with Oklahoma City having rattled off seven wins in a row.
The Thunder have a great many defensive issues, and the offense won't always be there to bail them out.
However, the Bulls are consistent, motivated, get quality performances on both sides of the ball from all of their teammates and have only been challenged recently in games where Derrick Rose is out because of turf toe.
In a lot of ways, this week is about cold hard facts. Here are even more examples.
