Irving to remain out with concussion

  •

The Cavaliers are going to extremely cautious with prized rookie Kyrie Irving, who is sidelined with a concussion. He's missed the Cavs' last two games with the injury and won't play against Philadelphia on Saturday.

The Rookie of the Year candidate hit the back of his head on Heat guard Dwyane Wade's knee on Tuesday in Miami. Irving had a headache overnight, but was set to play against the Clippers on Wednesday. After a pregame workout, he complained his head felt like it "was on fire." He was administered a concussion test and shut down.

"In the NBA, this is the first I've dealt with it," Cavs coach Byron Scott said. "It's very serious business.

"He's getting better. We're going through NBA protocol. He'll be out (Friday and Saturday). We'll see how he is (on Wednesday versus Indiana). We won't risk putting him out there until then."

The league has guidelines to follow with concussions.

"We all know how serious this thing can be," Scott said. "That's why we're taking a cautious (approach)."

The NBA Concussion Program guidelines are being followed, and Irving's status remains day-to-day. The earliest he could play is Wednesday against Indiana.

G Ramon Sessions has started the last two games for the Cavs and averaged 14.5 assists.

Irving, the No. 1 pick in the 2011 draft, is the Cavs' leading scorer at 18 points per game.
