Third quarter blues strike again

The Sports Xchange

--The third quarter in this series has been a complete disaster for the Magic. They have scored 13, 13 and 17 points, respectively, in the third periods of the three games. The Pacers have outscored them 81-43 in that stretch, forcing the Magic to play from behind in each of the fourth quarters.

--Magic coach Stan Van Gundy, who has called this his most challenging season, finished ninth in the NBA's Coach of the Year balloting. He received one second-place vote. He was one of four nominees for the Professional Basketball Writers Association's Rudy Tomjanovich Award, which is given annually to the coach who combines cooperation with the media and fans along with his coaching prowess. The other three nominees are George Karl, Rick Carlisle and Doc Rivers.

--Dwight Howard wasn't around Wednesday to comment -- he was still in Los Angeles doing his post-surgery rehab for the herniated disk in his back -- but his run of three consecutive Defensive Player of the Year Awards came to an end. Tyson Chandler of the Knicks won the award this year. Howard, who led the league in rebounding but not blocked shots this season, was the only player in league history to win the award in three consecutive seasons. His shot-blocking average dipped this season from 2.4 per game to 2.1.

QUOTE To NOTE: "We were awful. No one had a good game." -- Magic coach Stan Van Gundy.
