--F Kyle Singler might have to scrounge for minutes next season, but if his summer-league play is any indication, he'll be tough to keep out of the rotation. Singler, the ex-Duke star, was one of the Pistons' two 2011 second-round draft picks. Rather than waiting out the lockout, he opted to play in Spain last season. Singler averaged 13 points in Detroit's first two Orlando Summer League games while displaying a smooth outside stroke and crafty moves driving to the basket. Singler, a small forward, will have to battle veterans Tayshaun Prince and Corey Maggette for playing time, unless coach Lawrence Frank experiments with Singler at shooting guard.

--F Austin Daye made the unusual decision to play in the summer league despite being a rotation player for a majority of the last three seasons. Daye wanted to rebuild his confidence after a brutal third season in which he shot 32.2 percent, while coach Lawrence Frank wanted to see if the wispy 6-foot-11 Daye could become a "stretch" power forward. The early returns were promising. Daye had a 24-point game against Orlando on 8-of-10 shooting, mostly on perimeter shots. If the coaching staff is satisfied that Daye can handle that role, the Pistons would have more incentive to use their amnesty clause on another perimeter-oriented power forward, Charlie Villanueva.

--G Kim English has the early lead to replace Ben Gordon as Rodney Stuckey's primary backup at shooting guard. Gordon was traded to Charlotte. Though English was drafted in the second round last month, the Pistons have been raving about his maturity and approach. English was a 46 percent shooter from long range for Missouri last season, but the Pistons are just as pleased with his defensive tenacity.

"He brings extreme toughness. He brings a motor to our team that we really value," vice president of basketball operations George David said. "He just brings a perseverance, determination and toughness that fits everything that we're about and everything we're trying to be about."

--No significant injuries.
