Mason will be veteran presence in backcourt

The Sports Xchange

--The Hornets added a veteran to their backcourt when they signed veteran guard Roger Mason as a free agent. Mason (6-5), an eight-year veteran, has career averages of 6.7 points, 1.8 rebounds and 1.4 assists in 18.1 minutes per game over 424 contests (88 starts).

--The Hornets hope that someday first-round draft choice Anthony Davis will be an All-Star forward/center who leads a championship-caliber team. His first NBA regular-season game will give them a chance to gauge how he initially stacks up against the prototype for the type of player they hope he can become -- Spurs forward Tim Duncan.

New Orleans will play host to Duncan and the Spurs in their season opener on Halloween. New Orleans will open the preseason against the Magic on Oct. 7 in Mexico City. The Hornets will play two preseason games in the New Orleans Arena -- against the Bobcats on Oct. 9 and against the Rockets on Oct. 24.

"This move gives us a true center in Robin Lopez who brings youth and is a tough, inside rebounder. In Hakim, we get an experienced, versatile forward who will bring a veteran presence to our team." --Hornets General manager Dell Demps on the team's most recent trade.
