--Center Marc Gasol gets a chance to see his Spanish homeboys on Oct. 6 when the Grizzlies begin the exhibition season at home against Real Madrid. Memphis has home exhibitions against the Hawks (Oct. 14), Raptors (Oct. 15) and Magic (Oct. 24) and is on the road at Chicago (Oct. 9), Houston (Oct. 17), Milwaukee (Oct. 18 at LaCrosse, Wis.) and Indiana (Oct. 20).
--Grizzlies forward Zach Randolph has often said the last couple of seasons that Memphis might be the place he retires once his career ends.
Randolph, who feels connected to the city because he believes it has his grit-and-grind work ethic, is always doing good deeds around town.
His latest was donating $10,000 to the Memphis Animal Shelter for the physical and emotional rehabilitation of a young pit bull dog that was rescued from a drainpipe. Randolph paid for the dog, named Little Z-Bo in his honor, to be transported to the New Orleans' Villalobos Rescue Center, a veterinary facility specializing in pit bull care.
"It's remarkable he's still alive," said Randolph, who has a fondness for pit bulls. "I've got eight or nine of them, and I breed them and sell pups. And I take them to shows."
An Animal Planet TV crew filmed the dog's departure recently. Randolph gave the dog a blue-and-gray Grizzlies collar as a parting gift.
