Well, it's the first week, so nothing makes sense -- and neither do these power rankings.

The rankings are supposed to be a measure of how teams are playing right now compared to their competition. Not in a month, not in four months, not at season's end. Right now.
As a result, there's going to be some weird things happening when there's a maximum of only four games in the books. The Lakers' spot below is based on three ugly losses and a win over the team in last place (spoiler alert, Detroit). The Hawks are coming off a pretty impressive win at Oklahoma City despite the Thunder being in the No. 20 position.
If there's a theme for the week, it's pluck. The Knicks are awfully plucky, with their "passing" and "consistent team concept." Portland, Cleveland, even the Bobcats have some pluck. The NBA season is a grind that turns pluck into ash, though, and if the teams in the top half survive it, it will be about true strength and not just pluck.
But until then, go vote, and enjoy a very plucky Power Rankings.
