Coaching Moves
Team New Coach Date Hired Previous Coach
Atlanta Mike Woodson July 8 Terry Stotts
  • Woodson comes to Atlanta after spending the past season as an assistant on the staff of the Detroit Pistons. Woodson brings 19 years of NBA experience as a player and assistant to Atlanta, which has missed the playoffs each of the past five seasons.
Boston Doc Rivers Apr. 28 John Carroll (Jim O'Brien)
  • Rivers will have another opportunity to show what he can do following his firing in Orlando. Rivers earned Coach of the Year honors in the 1999-00 season, which was his first season as Orlando's head coach. Jim O'Brien stepped down as the team's coach in the middle of the season and was replaced by John Carroll, who finished the season on an interim basis.
Golden State Mike Montgomery May 19 Eric Musselman
  • Musselman's tenure as the Warriors' head coach is brief. He received a phone call from new GM Chris Mullin, who gave him the news Wednesday night. He is replaced by Mike Montgomery, who has built a reputation as a great coach at Stanford, where he has been for the previous 18 seasons. He has no NBA experience.
L.A. Lakers Rudy Tomjanovich July 10 Phil Jackson
  • Tomjanovich has agreed to join the Lakers after retiring in 2003 after a 12-year stint with the Rockets. Rudy T is no stranger to guiding teams to the NBA title, leading the Rockets to the championship in 1994 and 1995. The 55-year-old left coaching, two months after being diagnosed with bladder cancer. He is reportedly in good health now and most recently worked as a scout with the Rockets last season.
New Orleans Byron Scott May 28 Tim Floyd
  • Scott was released by the Nets during the middle of the season, and gets the nod in New Orleans. He led the Nets to two consecutive NBA Finals, but started off slow in New Jersey this past season. He replaces Tim Floyd, who was released by the Hornets after the team was eliminated in the first round of the playoffs by Miami.
Philadelphia Jim O'Brien Apr. 20 Chris Ford (Randy Ayers)
  • O'Brien is a Philadelphia native and a Saint Joseph's alum who stepped down as Boston's coach as a result of Danny Ainge's personnel decisions during the 2003-04 season. The 76ers fired Randy Ayers on Feb. 10 and replaced him with Chris Ford on an interim basis.
Toronto Sam Mitchell June 29 Kevin O'Neill
  • The Raptors hired Sam Mitchell after an exhaustive search to replace Kevin O'Neill, who was released of his duties on April 16. Mitchell served as an assistant coach with the Bucks last season. He spent the last month with the expansion Bobcats as an assistant to Bernie Bickerstaff.
