Canadian high school star Chiriaev hopes to play in Europe

TORONTO -- Canadian high school basketball star Ivan Chiriaev removed his name from the NBA Draft and likely will try to play professionally in Europe.

The 7-foot-1 Chiriaev proclaimed the NBA "needs" him when he announced in March he was applying for the draft.

"At this time, it is better for Ivan to play in a developmental situation -- probably in Europe," said Bill Duffy of BDA Sports, the agency that represents Chiriaev.

Because he has signed with an agent, Chiriaev isn't eligible to play at an NCAA school. He is free to try and sign with a team in any of the European leagues.
