Gasol ready to take Grizzlies to another level

MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- Pau Gasol signed a multiyear contract extension with the Memphis Grizzlies, who said they were impressed by the 2002 NBA rookie of the year's play for Spain at the Athens Olympics.

Gasol led the Grizzlies last year with 17.7 points, 7.7 rebounds and 1.69 blocks per game. The 7-foot forward ranked 20th in the NBA in field goal percentage and 18th in blocks.

"We are delighted to reach a contract agreement with Pau," Jerry West, the team's president of basketball operations, said Friday.

"His play in the Olympic Games this summer displayed his value, while showcasing his talent to people throughout the world. Pau is a dynamic player, and we are happy to have him in Memphis as the cornerstone of our franchise."

Terms were not immediatedly available.

Gasol, 24, missed the first NBA game of his three-year career on April 5 with a sore right foot, snapping a streak of 240 straight games that had been sixth longest in the league.

Gasol changed agents last month hoping to work out a contract extension. He had one year remaining on his rookie contract and called the deal an important step in his career.

"This is a very big commitment for all parties. I look forward to being a part of the Grizzlies' exciting future and taking this team to another level," he said.
