Make or suck time for baffling Sixers

Among the game's biggest surprises is what's going on with Philadelphia. Quite frankly, it's puzzling.

If, before the season began, I were to tell you Chris Webber would play the most games in six seasons and average close to a double-double, you would've thought the Sixers would be in the driver's seat. And, Allen Iverson is as good as ever.

Fact is, Iverson and Webber, those cagey aging veterans, have been one of the league's top combos.

So why is it, as the week begins ...

  • ... The Sixers find themselves looking to fend off Chicago for the honor of playing sacrificial lamb to Detroit for the second consecutive season?

  • ... How come Andre Iguodala, outside of making his mark during All-Star weekend, has underachieved?

  • ... Why is Kyle Korver still out there during critical defensive situations?

  • ... How come Samuel Dalembert has failed to turn the corner, struggling to the point where he was benched by Maurice Cheeks in favor of Steven Hunter?

  • ... Wasn't the hiring of Maurice Cheeks supposed to be the end-all, be-all to solving the Sixers' problems?

New Jersey has proved to be impressively talented, but 10 games better than Philly?

This is when we find out exactly what these Sixers are made of. The bottom line is that though the reward is simply a ticket to the playoff dance as the last invitee, it beats the ultimate embarrassment of missing the party altogether.

With two games against Chicago scheduled this week, will the Sixers persevere or crumble? Will they save face or force the front office's hand as far as wholesale changes are concerned? Already, talk of moving Iverson has surfaced. If Philadelphia fails to make the playoffs, who can argue with moving in that direction?

It doesn't matter what side of the ledger you're on -- the time for reckoning is here. These Bulls aren't the Knicks; Philadelphia managed to get healthy by blowing the New Yorkers out twice. Chicago is a team just as hungry to salvage a disappointing season. The only difference is the Sixers are supposed to be more talented, and, by the way, they have a cushion.

Iverson and Webber are future Hall of Famers enjoying strong seasons. If that's not enough to clinch a spot in the postseason in the sorry Eastern Conference, the entire makeup of the team, from the front office to the coaching to the players must be re-evaluated. Heads would deserve to roll.
