FRANKFURT, Germany -- The man who discovered Dallas Mavericks star Dirk Nowitzki has been charged with tax evasion.
Holger Geschwindner, who was also the future star's personal coach, spent five weeks in custody last year, a prosecutor said Wednesday.
Gerhard Schmitt, chief prosecutor in the southern German town of Hof, said formal tax evasion charges have been raised. He would not discuss the amount of money Geschwindner is suspected of evading taxes on.
Authorities believe Geschwindner evaded taxes on a share of a Nowitzki's income in the National Basketball Association.
Geschwindner says the case centers on a 1996 document, which tax authorities suspect gave the coach a share of Nowitzki's earnings. The pair say they did not proceed with the deal.
Geschwindner, 60, captained Germany's 1972 Olympic basketball team.
