Agent says Yao's recovery from foot surgery going well

SHANGHAI, China -- Houston Rockets center Yao Ming is recovering well from foot surgery and could still play in this summer's world championships, his agent said.

Yao will start a physical rehabilitation program soon and plans to be back on the court by late June, Zhang Mingji was quoted as saying by the website of China Radio International.

Yao underwent surgery April 14 in Houston to repair the fifth metatarsal bone in his left foot, which was broken during a game against Utah. Rockets general manager Carroll Dawson said Yao's injury could take 4-6 months to heal.

"I believe there is still a possibility for Yao to participate in the world championships," Zhang was quoted as saying in the report posted Wednesday.

Calls to Zhang's mobile phone were answered by a message saying the power was off.

The world championships begin Aug. 19 in Japan.
