OAKLAND, Calif. -- Coach Don Nelson hired his first assistant with the Golden State Warriors on Friday, longtime co-worker Larry Riley.
Riley spent the last six seasons as an assistant and scout with the Dallas Mavericks. Nelson, hired by the Warriors on Wednesday to replace Mike Montgomery, was the Mavericks' coach until March 2005.
Riley broke into the NBA with six years as an assistant coach and scout with the Milwaukee Bucks, then spent six seasons as the Vancouver Grizzlies' director of player personnel before joining the Mavericks.
The Warriors haven't announced whether Montgomery's top assistants -- former NBA players Mario Elie and Keith Smart -- will return.
