Cavaliers' Kyrie Irving: Does not practice Thursday
by RotoWire Staff | Special to CBSSports.com

Irving (calf) didn't participate in practice Thursday, Joe Vardon of the Cleveland Plain Dealer reports.

Irving is still aching a bit after leaving Tuesday's preseason finale against the Wizards with left calf tightness, but the team insists he's not at risk of missing the regular-season opener Oct. 25 against the Knicks. After he was limited for the first couple months of last season while recovering from a fractured kneecap, Irving's fantasy outlook is much brighter heading into the upcoming campaign.

Cavaliers' Kay Felder: Will open season as backup point guard
by RotoWire Staff | Special to CBSSports.com

Coach Tyronn Lue confirmed over the weekend that Felder has won the Cavs' backup point guard job, Joe Vardon of the Cleveland Plain Dealer reports.

Lue didn't seem to fully commit to Felder sticking as the top backup all season, indicating that the rookie will handle that role "for now." That said, unless the Cavaliers decide to upgrade at point guard via trade, it's likely that Felder will enjoy some longevity with the second unit, though he's not necessarily a lock to see the floor in every game. Starter Kyrie Irving figures to receive around 35 minutes per contest, and wing players LeBron James and Iman Shumpert are both capable of assuming ball-handling duties for short periods of time when Irving is on the bench resting.

Cavaliers' Iman Shumpert: Slides into backup role in Smith's debut
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Shumpert came off the bench and produced four points (2-9 FG, 0-4 3Pt), seven rebounds, five assists and one steal across 23 minutes in Tuesday's 96-91 preseason loss to the Wizards.

Shumpert had been working as the Cavs' starting shooting guard for most of the season while J.R. Smith remained a free agent, but after Smith inked a four-year deal with the club Friday, Shumpert will settle back into a lower-minute role off the bench. As a defense-first player who averaged just 5.8 points per game last season, Shumpert won't provide much fantasy value as a member of the second unit.

Cavaliers' LeBron James: Scores 18 points in final preseason tune-up
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

James scored a team-leading 18 points (8-13 FG, 0-1 3Pt, 2-4 FT) to go with four rebounds, four steals, two assists and one block across 26 minutes in Tuesday's 96-91 preseason loss to the Wizards.

The Cavaliers have limited James to only three preseason appearances, but conditioning has never been an issue for the reigning NBA Finals MVP. He was excellent during his time on the floor Tuesday and should be ready to play his usual 35 or so minutes per game when the Cavaliers take on the Knicks in their regular-season opener Oct. 25.

Cavaliers' Tristan Thompson: Perfect from field in double-double effort
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Thompson posted 14 points (6-6 FG, 2-5 FT), 10 rebounds and one assist across 23 minutes in Tuesday's 96-91 preseason loss to the Wizards.

It was only Thompson's second appearance of the preseason after he was previously limited by a foot injury, but the Cavs' starting center looked to be in his usual form Tuesday night. He'll rarely see many shot attempts on the offensive end beyond putbacks and finishing off alley-oops, but the 25-year-old stacks up with just about anyone for his prowess on the glass on both sides of the court. That could put him in line for around 25-to-30 double-doubles over the course of the campaign.
