Mejia's Offseason Grade
The Bucks overspent to retain Michael Redd, giving him a $90 million dollar deal, but you can understand why. What's the point in getting everyone excited over landing No. 1 pick Andrew Bogut if you're just going to let your franchise player walk? With both in the fold, the Bucks are generating excitement, particularly since they also coaxed coveted small forward Bobby Simmons to come over from the Clippers. A trade for Jamaal Magloire gives the Bucks a very solid duo at center Grade: A
Key Players
Michael Redd: Michael Redd serves as the Bucks' go-to player on offense.
Bobby Simmons: With Desmond Mason gone, Simmons will likely receive more minutes at small forward.
Role Playing
T.J. Ford, Guard
Pace-setter: He's back with a clean bill of health, which means the Road Runner show can pick up where it left off. Beep, beep. Ford plays the game faster than most, so if his teammates can keep up, Milwaukee should be one of the league's top-scoring teams.
Bobby Simmons, Guard/Forward
Mr. Versatility: Coach Terry Stotts plans on playing him at the two, three and even the four, making sure to get the offseason acquisition as much floor time as possible. It remains to be seen how he handles his own defensively against bigger competition, but he'll definitely aid Milwuakee's offense with his strong midrange shooting and constant hustle.
Dan Gadzuric, Center
Post defender: The one knock on rookie Andrew Bogut is that he might struggle defensively, making Gadzuric's presence vital. He'll be back to a reserve role after starting 81 last year, but will nonetheless be counted on to help anchor the Bucks interior defense when he's in there and may even play alongside Bogut in some instances. With him, anything he contributes on offense is a bonus.
Burning Question
Can Andrew Bogut flourish immediately and help vault Milwaukee into playoff contention?
The team had a fabulous offseason, keeping Michael Redd, getting T.J. Ford back and signing Bobby Simmons, but the new man in the middle is going to be the key, both now and in the future. How quickly he emerges will dictate whether the team has enough firepower to keep up with their deeper, more-established division rivals. He figures to take his lumps with everyone gunning for him, but considering how fundamentally sound he is and how comfortable he has looked in preseason, expect him to hold his own. If the double-doubles come immediately the Eastern Conference has another team to monitor.
