--C Zaza Pachulia got the start at center in place of Al Horford (ankle), and despite offensive numbers to the contrary, had a significant impact on the game. He had six points and six rebounds and played the type of physical interior defense that the Hawks absolutely needed against LaMarcus Aldridge and the Blazers.
--F Josh Smith played his role to perfection against the Blazers. He didn't post huge numbers (14 points, 12 rebounds, six assists and two blocks). He just did whatever was necessary to make sure the Hawks stayed in control of the game late. And when Smith plays within himself and does the dirty work, both he and the Hawks are usually at their very best.
--G Damien Wilkins joined G Jeff Teague and G Jamal Crawford in the list of surprising heroes for the Hawks on Saturday. His 12 points, on 6-for-9 shooting, didn't tell the whole story about what he brought to the table for the Hawks. Wilkins is the ideal utility man for this team, and according to coach Larry Drew, he has been in line for an increased role for quite some time.
--C Al Horford (sore left ankle) missed the Portland game Saturday. His status is day-to-day.
