Cavaliers report: Notes, quotes
--F Samardo Samuels signed with Cleveland. Samuels, 21, declared for the 2010 NBA Draft after averaging 13.5 points in two seasons at Louisville, but went undrafted. He averaged 12.6 points and 7.4 rebounds in five games with the Chicago Bulls in the 2010 NBA Summer League in Las Vegas.
--The Cavs' front office lost another key figure Aug. 5 when assistant general manager Lance Blanks was named the new general manager of the Phoenix Suns. The Cavs have already lost their GM, Danny Ferry, and their capologist, Mike Winger, this summer. Ferry resigned after five seasons. Winger left to take a position with the Thunder.
--Coach Byron Scott completed the rest of his coaching staff on July 29. He had already announced the hiring of lead assistant Paul Pressey, who spent three years with him in New Orleans. Pressey coached the Cavs' summer league team in Las Vegas. The rest of his staff includes one familiar face, former Ohio State star Chris Jent. He was the only holdover from ex-coach Mike Brown's staff. He was best known as LeBron James' personal shooting coach. The other two additions were Jamahl Mosley and Joe Prunty. That means the popular Melvin Hunt, another member of Brown's staff, was relieved of his duties. He'll still be paid for this season.
--The Cavaliers announced the promotion of Wes Wilcox to director of pro player personnel on Aug. 4. Also, Trent Redden has the new title of basketball operations manager/scout. Wilcox started with the Cavs before the 2003-04 season and for the last three seasons has served as the team's pro/college scout. He has played a key role in the Cavs' personnel scouting process focusing on the minor leagues, NCAA, NBA and numerous international leagues.
QUOTE TO NOTE
"Our thoughts and prayers are for Lorenzen Wright's family as they deal with these very tough and tragic circumstances. For those of us that worked with Lorenzen, we knew him as a very vibrant, friendly, caring, young human being. I spent a lot of time with Lorenzen in Atlanta, and then here again in Cleveland, and was very, very saddened to hear the news of his death. He will be missed by many." -- Cavs general manager Chris Grant on Lorenzen Wright's death.
