Clippers report: Getting inside

The Clippers have won three straight games to improve to 3-4, but the team might need to develop a defensive stopper if it wants to avoid getting torched by an opponent's top scorer on a frequent basis.

In Saturday's home victory over the Grizzlies. Memphis' Rudy Gay frequently had his way with whomever was guarding him. From Sebastian Telfair to Eric Gordon, all of the defensive attempts by the Clippers to slow down Gay were fruitless.

Gay repeatedly drove to the basket without interruption and ended up with 33 points in 40 minutes of play. And while Gay can be called an exceptional young talent, when he can do whatever he wants on offense against a squad that just held high-powered Golden State in check, then something must be missing.

The Clippers appear to lack a true defensive stopper. And while a player of that caliber might not be necessary for the Clippers to be in contention for a playoff spot, if opponents are aware that they can hand over the basketball to their most proficient point-maker for profit, then the league's proven scorers, such as Kobe Bryant, Carmelo Anthony and LeBron James, may have field days when they line up against the Clippers.

One of those proven offensive threats, New Orleans' David West, will be on display Monday night as the Clippers continue their four-game homestand. Also, this will be former Hornet Rasual Butler's first game against his former team.

CLIPPERS 113, GRIZZLIES 110: The Clippers had a hard time initially with the young and athletic Grizzlies but eventually pulled away late in the second half of Saturday's home game. The Clippers took advantage of Memphis' inexperience late in the game, as Baron Davis almost came up with a steal with 5.9 seconds to go on a careless inbound pass before Memphis' Rudy Gay missed a desperation 3-pointer at the buzzer.

Just an early season observation. No disrespect to Chris Kaman because he has simply been "the man" so far for the 0-4 Clips, but when he is a team's go-to guy, that's not a good omen. So far this season I have seen the ball dumped into Kaman way too often...he's been spectacular so far, especially with a much-improved ...(more)
