Blazers must defend pick-and-roll better

It isn't anything too complicated the Trail Blazers must do as they prepare for Game 3 of their first-round playoff series with Dallas Thursday night at the Rose Garden.

Atop the adjustment list: Defend the Mavericks' pick-and-roll better.

Peja Stojakovic and Jason Kidd combined to make 8 of 16 3-point attempts -- most of them off the pick-and-roll -- as Dallas beat Portland 101-89 Tuesday night in Game 2 at American Airlines Center.

Portland's strategy was to not chase the Dallas centers -- Tyson Chandler and Brendan Haywood -- outside after the initial screen. Too often, though, the Blazers' wing defender would get either rubbed off the screen or get caught inside, and either Kidd or Stojakovic would step out to the 3-point line and fire away.

The Mavericks "are attacking our (center) and running what we call a rub," Portland coach Nate McMillan said. "We try to keep our big in the paint, to not guard (the center) outside. What is happening, our guards are getting nailed on screens. It's becoming one-on-one with our bigs, and their guards are making shots. We're going to have to make adjustments with that set."

MAVERICKS 101, TRAIL BLAZERS 89: Dirk Nowitzki shrugged off a slow start with 33 points and Peja Stojakovic came off the bench for 21 points as Dallas broke it open in the fourth quarter. The Mavericks led 73-72 entering the final period but outscored the visitors 28-17 the rest of the way. Portland led by as many as eight points in the first quarter and was in front 52-50 at the half.
