Beefy big men are on Wizards' draft menu
Now that they know they have the sixth pick in the NBA Draft, the Wizards will turn their attention to trying to find a player who has the most value at the position in what is widely viewed as a weak draft.
The Wizards will be looking to bolster a frontcourt that was weak and at times appeared to be physically frail as other teams bullied their big men.
Since the draft is not very deep -- and this is especially the case with power forwards and centers -- the Wizards are one of those teams that are going to be associated with rumors that they are trying to trade up.
If they stay put, which more than likely will be the case, then they will be looking at players such as San Diego State sophomore swingman Kawhi Leonard; Texas freshman forward Tristan Thompson; Kansas' twin junior forwards, Markieff Morris and Marcus Morris; center Jan Vesely from the Czech Republic; and Lithuanian forwards Jonas Valanciunas and Donatas Motiejunas.
Since 1980, the Wizards have selected sixth on three previous occasions and wound up picking Calbert Cheaney in 1993, Tom Gugliotta in 1992 and Mel Turpin in 1984
No team has won the top pick in the lottery in back-to-back seasons since Orlando did so in 1992 and '93. Last year the Wizards selected John Wall out of Kentucky with the top pick in the draft.
SEASON HIGHLIGHT
Six games into the season, John Wall delivered the first triple-double of his career, finishing with 19 points, 13 assists and 10 rebounds in a victory over Cleveland. It was an omen of good things to come for a team that had bottomed out the year before.
TURNING POINT
The Wizards opened the season a respectable 5-8. However, the bottom fell out over the next three months as the Wizards proceeded to lose 11 of their next 12 games.
