Chargers running back Ryan Mathews suffered "minor injuries" late Monday night after he was involved in a two-vehicle collision near the Sports Arena area of San Diego, Debbi Baker of the U-T San Diego reports.
Mathews, the team's 2010 first-round pick, lost control of his 2010 BMW and hit another vehicle, California Highway Patrol Officer Mary Bailey told the U-T. Bailey, who said that it didn't appear that drugs or alcohol were involved, suggested that Mathews may have been driving too fast. The running back was also taken to an area hospital after complaining of pain.
Mathews shared the Chargers' rushing workload with Mike Tolbert last season but with Tolbert now in Carolina, coach Norv Turner indicated that Mathews would assume the feature role. Assuming his injuries aren't serious, that should still be a very real possibility.
