Titans extend cornerback Jason McCourty through 2017 with $43M deal

The Titans and cornerback Jason McCourty agreed to a multi-year extension that will keep McCourty with Tennessee through 2017, the team announced on Thursday.

McCourty, who was drafted by the Titans in the sixth round of the 2009 NFL Draft, emerged last season as an upper-end defensive back, starting 15 games, picking two passes, deflecting 13 passes and forcing one fumble. McCourty also piled up 105 total tackles.

Per Albert Breer of the NFL Network, the deal is worth $43 million in new money with $20 million in guarantees and bonuses.

McCourty was entering the final year of his rookie contract, which paid him $1.26 million this season, an amount that Breer notes is folded into the deal.

This offseason, the Titans declined to attempt and re-sign free-agent cornerback Cortland Finnegan, letting him leave for St. Louis with a deal that contained $24 million in guaranteed money. Pretty clearly the Titans decided to earmark that money instead for McCourty.
