Colts owner Jim Irsay fully embraces Twitter. In fact, you could say he embraces it a little too much. Thursday morning he got things rolling with the this understated tweet: "TRADE WINDS BLOWING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"
He followed that up this evening with more details:
SERIOUS TRADE WINDS Swirling! We're talking given up high pick for SERIOUS Vet/Starter!.. these deals often crumble n don't reach completion— Jim Irsay (@JimIrsay) August 23, 2012
Internet speculation began immediately with Steelers wide receiver Mike Wallace and Jaguars running back Maurice Jones-Drew the two names most often mentioned. Wallace, who missed spring workouts, training camp and Pittsburgh's two preseason games, is set to report to the Steelers this weekend to sign his restricted free-agent tender. Jones-Drew, meanwhile, continues to hold out for a new deal that it appears he won't be getting from his current employer (though he expects things will work out).
According to CBSSports.com's Jason La Canfora, the Colts are in fact pursuing a trade for a veteran starter but sources indicate that it's neither Wallace nor Jones-Drew.
So who might Irsay be referring to?
"Some have suggested a cornerback, like Mike Jenkins of the Cowboys or Cary Williams of the Ravens," La Canfora wrote Thursday night, "but it is not either of those players, league sources said. The Colts are seeking offensive line help and targeting options there, and a veteran tackle could be what they're seeking. Teams are often reluctant to deal those players, especially in their prime.
"The Colts were not fixated on one particular deal, sources said, but were exploring multiple possibilties in the hopes of completing one that could upgrade their talent."
