Matt Cassel ruled out for Week 6, Brady Quinn starting at QB for Chiefs Sunday

By Will Brinson | NFL Writer

The scrutiny surrounding the Chiefs' quarterback position over the past week relates mostly to a pocket of fans cheering Matt Cassel's injury. But it also relates to the possibility that Cassel wouldn't be ready to go this week.

He won't be: the Chiefs ruled out Cassel for action in Week 6 on Thursday. Romeo Crennel announced that Brady Quinn would start on Sunday against the Buccaneers.

Quinn stepped in for Cassel, who suffered a concussion against the Ravens during Week 5. The backup heard his name being chanted by fans while Cassel was injured and managed to go 2-for-2 during his stint under center.

The former Notre Dame star isn't the most inspiring of backup choices, but it's either him or Ricki Stanzi at this point for Kansas City.

And Quinn could potentially impress. The Buccaneers are last in the NFL in passing yards allowed per game (yes, it's kind of surprising) at 345.2. They give up nine yards per pass. And Quinn will have weapons: Dwayne Bowe and Jamaal Charles could put up numbers against Tampa Bay, particularly in the passing game.

I wouldn't sprint out and put my mortgage on KC and/or go all-in on Quinn in my fantasy league. But assuming he'll simply stink the joint up because he's Brady Quinn isn't giving the Chiefs enough credit.

They need something to prove to the fans that either a) they were right and Cassel needs to ride the pine or b) they're just not upgrading from Cassel this year. Either way, the incumbent gets a two-week breather (the Chiefs are on bye in Week 7).

Although when KC gets back, there's no guarantee that Cassel will still have the job.
