Romney and Obama take turns praising RG3 (US Presswire)

In general, sports is supposed to be a diversion from the daily mundanities of the real world. But every once in a while (specifically, every four years), politics invites itself into the conversation because the presidential election demands your attention. At least according to those running for president.

With that in mind, and the 2012 election a little more than two weeks away, President Barack Obama and Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney both made appearances on Fox Sports' pregame show to extol the awesomeness of Redskins rookie quarterback Robert Griffin III.

According to the Sports Bog's Dan Steinberg, the segment started with studio host Curt Menefee referring to RG3 as "the new sensation that's sweeping the nation," before Obama and Romney weighed in on the phenomenonal start to Griffin's NFL career.

Romney: “RG3 hasn't been in Washington very long, but he's already created change … (he) has really struck a chord with sports fans, uniting Democrats and Republicans. … I wish him the best of luck in New York today. When he's on the field, anything can happen.”

Trenchant commentary there.

Obama was just as insightful: “It's tough to unite this city around anything. Believe me, I know. But RG3 makes it look easy. … He's a great young man, and a heck of a lot of fun to watch. And I wish him all the luck in the world, except when he plays the Bears. ... Robert, you're welcome at my house for a pickup game any time.”

Ah, yes, Griffin is a uniter, not a divider. He's like the Thornton Melon of the football world.
