Bill Cowher: 'I have no plans to go back into coaching'

By Ryan Wilson | CBSSports.com

It's become an annual event. Every January, head coaches around the league are fired and invariably former Steelers coach and current The NFL Today studio analyst Bill Cowher's name comes up as a possible replacement. And every January, Cowher goes on air to make it clear he likes his current job with CBS and won't be returning to the NFL.

So it wasn't particularly surprising that Saturday's The NFL Todaybegan with Cowher issuing a statement he could've written in 2007, his first year out of football and with the network:

This contradicts a report by Newsday's Neil Best last week. Best asked Cowher if he planned to coach again at some point and he answered "yes." Cowher also spoke about the concerns that when he does return to the sidelines the game may have passed him by.

“I think it's a non-issue,” Cowher told Best of his time away from coaching (via PFT). “I did it for 27 years. You don't just forget things overnight. One thing about this job is it's been really good because it allows me to study the game and do features on the game. I want to know what I'm talking about so I'm watching tape. It's not like I'm out of it. I know how the game is changing.”

For now, it's not something Cowher has to worry about.
