Ravens linebacker Terrell Suggs can admit after the fact how impressed he is with 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick. That's probably not something Suggs would have discussed before Super Bowl XLVII and, truthfully, Kaepernick was decidedly unimpressive in the first half of the eventual Baltimore win.
But in the second half, Kaepernick showed off his immense skills, finishing with 302 passing yards, 62 rushing yards and two total touchdowns as he nearly led his team to a tremendous comeback victory that fell just five yards short.
After all that, Suggs could see just how much of a weapon Kaepernick is for San Francisco.
“That kid's the truth,” Suggs told Jim Rome on Friday. “Going into the game, I thought it was all hype. He's only had nine starts and then I'm going down the line at the teams he's playing, and I'm like, ‘OK. All right. He's got some good stats, but we will see.'”
Early on, Kaepernick appeared nervous -- along with the rest of his teammates -- and badly overthrew Randy Moss in the first half and was intercepted by Ed Reed. But after falling behind 28-6 early in the third quarter, Kaepernick began showcasing his skills.
The 49ers didn't take much advantage of their read-option abilities, probably because the Ravens took away Kaepernick's outside opportunities to run the ball. But during the postseason, Kaepernick proved he's awfully effective throwing the ball as well.
“I hate quarterbacks,” Suggs said. “But that kid is the truth, and I have the upmost respect for him.”
Hmm, “the truth.” Sounds like a good candidate to be Kaepernick's next tattoo.
