Report: Matt Moore re-signs in Miami to be Ryan Tannehill's backup

After getting beat out by Ryan Tannehill last training camp for the Dolphins' starting quarterback job, we thought Matt Moore was the top free agent quarterback heading into this offseason and that he would have a chance to compete for a starting spot if he signed with the right team.

Though the chance to start in Miami seems unlikely at this point, considering Tannehill's success last season, it appears Moore is returning to the Dolphins again. That's the word from NFL.com's Jeff Darlington, who writes that Moore has signed a deal to remain Tannehill's backup on a two-year, $8 million deal.

The signing seems a little strange from Moore's point of view, because as CBSSports.com's Will Brinson pointed out, there seemingly could have been opportunities for him to compete for an actual starting job if he signed with, say, the Vikings or Jaguars -- squads with young, unsure quarterbacks whose positions could be in jeopardy.

Instead, Moore has signed with a Miami team that believes it has in Tannehill a quarterback of the future.

For the Dolphins, though, the signing makes perfect sense. I wrote last season that Moore was the No. 1 backup quarterback in the league, and if, for some reason, Tannehill has to miss time, Miami certainly can win games with Moore at the helm.
