Report: Jets insisting Holmes reduce his $11 million salary
With the Jets busy trying to get under the 2013 salary cap, discussions with wide receiver Santonio Holmes continue as they try to convince him to restructure his deal.
And sure, Holmes has been a solid player in the past (albeit not necessarily a solid teammate), but he also suffered a season-ending Lisfranc injury in his left foot early last year and has had two surgeries to correct the problem. So, nobody is even sure how effective he'll be next year.
Holmes is guaranteed $7.5 million, so it wouldn't make any sense for the team to offer him less than that. But since there's offsetting language in his deal that says Holmes can't double-dip on his salary if he was to take a job with another franchise, the Jets could release Holmes and hope somebody else picks him up to defray part of that cost.
Of course, that cap number still would be huge for New York for a guy who's no longer playing for the Jets.
Which means if you're new general manager John Idzik, you've probably been sighing and muttering to yourself quite a bit lately.
