Report: Chiefs reach agreement with Saints backup QB Chase Daniel

By Ryan Wilson | CBSSports.com

The Chiefs have a new backup quarterback to go along with recently acquired Alex Smith. Kansas City traded for Chase Daniel, the longtime Saints backup, shortly after free agency opened Tuesday and agreed in principle with him on a three-year deal.

ESPN's Adam Schefter first tweeted the news.

Seems weird, right?

According to CBS Sports NFL Insider Jason La Canfora, Daniel was quietly in demand in the hours leading up to the free-agency feeding frenzy:

"Several sources believe Daniel will end up earning in excess of $3 million per season, and teams are interested in lining up visits for when that process begins at 4 p.m. It is not a deep quarterback class in free agency, and the Chiefs, Giants, Bears, 49ers and Vikings are also looking for backups."

Before Tuesday, Daniel was best known as the guy always high-fiving Drew Brees as he came off the field; now the he'll assume that role behind Smith.

So in the past couple of weeks, the Chiefs have overhauled the quarterback position and gotten rid of Matt Cassel and Brady Quinn, while adding Smith and Daniel.

A former undrafted free agent out of Missouri, Daniel was originally signed by the Redskins in 2009 before landing in New Orleans, where he was Brees' understudy from 2009-12. He's attempted nine passes in his NFL career, completing seven, and has yet to throw for a touchdown.
