Eagles sign five, including TE James Casey and S Patrick Chung
The Philadelphia Eagles opened up free agency on Tuesday with almost $40 million to spend and new coach Chip Kelly didn't waste any time spending it. The Eagles signed five players, including former Texans tight end James Casey and former Patriots safety Patrick Chung.
The Eagles also signed former Panthers linebacker Jason Phillips, former Rams cornerback Bradley Fletcher and former 49ers nose tackle Isaac Sopoaga.
Sopoaga agreed to a three-year, $11 million deal that will guarantee him $5 million, according to Adam Caplan. Casey also agreed to a three-year deal that is set to pay him $12.5 million overall.
Phillips and Fletcher agreed to two-year deals, however, the financial details of those deals weren't available.
Chung, who signed a three-year, $10 million deal with the team, will be having a reunion of sorts with Kelly. Kelly was the offensive coordinator at Oregon during Chung's final two years with the Ducks. Chung had been with New England since being taken by the Patriots in the second round of the 2009 draft.
The Eagles weren't just signing players on Tuesday, they also released cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha. Dropping Asomugha created over $11 million in cap space for Philadelphia, moving the Eagles from $29 million in cap room to $40 million.
As for the hole left by Asomugha's departure, that's a void that could be filled by Fletcher, who's known as a solid cover corner.
