The New England Patriots offense may have taken a huge hit with Aaron Hernandez suffering a right ankle injury during the first quarter of Sunday's game against the Arizona Cardinals.

Hernandez suffered the injury on the second drive of the game when his leg rolled under him while he was blocking for Julian Edelman. He was helped off the field by the training staff and taken to the locker room for X-rays.

No break was revealed on the scans and the injury, at least initially, is believed to be a high-ankle sprain.

If the injury proves to be serious and lingers, it's not clear how the Patriots will replace Hernandez, who plays multiple roles in the offense. It will likely take multiple players to fill his role.

Sunday's game plan seemed to favor Edelman as the second receiver, but Wes Welker has been more involved in the second half with Hernandez sidelined. Tight end Michael Hoomanawanui has also seen an increase in action.
