There has been speculation in the Philadelphia area that Andy Reid will be fired as coach of the Eagles before this nightmare of a season is over. But Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie allowed his other two coaches -- Rich Kotite and Ray Rhodes -- to finish out their final seasons even though things were as bad then as they are now, and maybe even worse.

There's also been speculation that Reid would simply step down for the supposed good of his team and the entire organization. But Reid stepped on that speculation on Monday -- less than 24 hours after his team was embarrassed 31-6 by the Washington Redskins for their sixth straight loss -- and said he won't walk away from the job he's held the last 14 years.

“That would be a cop-out,'' Reid said. “That's not the way I'm wired, that's not the way I see things. We're going to keep battling.”

Reid then pointed out that he's been asked more than once if his team quit on him during the loss to the Redskins. He emphatically denied that happened and then said he couldn't expect his players to forge on if he doesn't.

“I'm not going to tell the team one thing and then do another,'' he said.

As for the possibility that Lurie could fire him before the end of the season, Reid said he wouldn't allow that speculation to become a distraction.

“You control what you can control, and that's getting better,'' he said. “So, there's where my emphasis is.”
