Vikings receiver Percy Harvin is sorry his sprained right ankle ended his season after be was placed on injured reserve on Wednesday.

“It certainly is disappointing that I was not able to finish out this season with my teammates,” Harvin said in a statement released by the team. “As a competitor I definitely wanted to get back out on the field but my injury has just not allowed me to progress to the point where I can help our team.

“I appreciate the efforts of our medical staff and the support of our fans in helping me through this process and look forward to coming back stronger and better than ever.”

Harvin had missed the past three games after sustaining the injury on Nov. 4 against Seattle.

However, Harvin tired to play through the pain, but he was limping while running routes on the practice field last week.

“He's one of the hardest working guys I have ever seen,” punter Chris Kluwe said. “He's a great dude. He's one of the fiercest competitors I have seen. He wants to win and he wants to win badly. He wants to contribute, and I think that's the kind of attitude you have to have if you want to succeed in the NFL -- you have to want to be out on the field and to do your job at a high level.”

RB Adrian Peterson said he was shocked by the news that Harvin would be placed on IR.

“I anticipated [his return],” Peterson said. “But I don't know the extent of the injury. It was shocking to me. Obviously, [they're] just doing what's best for him. Hopefully he'll and we'll have him back next year ready to roll.”
