In 52 regular-season games with the New England Patriots, WR Randy Moss made quite an impression on coach Bill Belichick.

During that span, Moss caught 259 passes for 3,904 yards and 50 touchdowns.

"He's an explosive dynamic player -- the smartest receiver I've ever coached," Belichick said Wednesday.

Since joining the 49ers this year, his 14th in the NFL, Moss' production is down, but Belichick still sees a player worth special attention.

"I think Randy looks like Randy. He's the greatest deep ball receiver I think that's ever played," Belichick said. "Nobody runs better patterns or has a better feel over the deep part of the field like Randy Moss.

"I still see him doing that. Because of his ability to do that, it certainly opens up a lot of other things as well because you have to respect the ability to stretch the field and go deep and get behind you."

Moss has 15 catches for 254 yards with a pair of touchdowns, but he's made his presence felt in other ways. He's shown to be a capable blocker and -- at times -- warranted attention on deep routes.

Belichick said Moss has always been a good blocker due to his long frame that allows him to cover up defenders.
