The New York Jets recently replaced general manager Mike Tannenbaum with John Idzik, and, of course, the questions about struggling quarterback Mark Sanchez have already begun.
Speaking with WFAN's Boomer Esiason and Craig Carton on Monday, Idzik said that he was "comfortable" having Sanchez on the roster.
“Yeah, I'm comfortable with Mark being a Jet,” Idzik said. “I told him as well [that] we're going to add competition. … It's going to help make Mark and everybody else better.”
Not exactly a rousing vote of confidence for Sanchez, who was a mess last season. Still, perhaps the fifth-year quarterback can take advantage of new life, as he'll be working with new offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg.
“I think he's champing at the bit,” Idzik said. “And he wants to get going with his new coordinator. He's all about competing. I got a really good feeling from Mark.”
Sanchez reached out to former quarterback Jeff Garcia last week, hoping to get a jump-start on the offense. Garcia played for Mornhinweg in San Francisco and Philadelphia. Idzik, though, doesn't have grand illusions. He just wants the Jets -- who were 6-10 last season -- to get better.

“That's just going to be a constant theme with us,” he said. “It's certainly going to apply at the quarterback position. But Mark is a New York Jet. We're glad to have him. I think he's a competitor.”
