Cardinals running back Javarris James, whose roster spot was already shaky at best, has been suspended for the first four games of 2013 for a substance-abuse violation, according to NFL.com.

James ran for six touchdowns as a short-yardage back with the Colts in 2010. An undrafted rookie out of Miami, Edgerrin James' cousin has not played in a regular-season game since.

The Colts released him after his marijuana arrest in 2011.

James, 25, missed the 2012 season after suffering a torn ACL in the preseason finale. Reportedly, he had been outplayed for a backup job by William Powell and Alfonso Smith before the injury.

James is a restricted free agent who's not likely to draw interest.
