The San Francisco 49ers have a decision to make. What to do with quarterback Alex Smith? General manager Trent Baalke said they're not sure.
"We're going to look at all options available," Baalke said Thursday at the NFL Scouting Combine, according to CSNBayArea.com. "Are you going to trade him for sure? No, that hasn't been decided."
If Smith isn't dealt by April 1, his $7.5 million contract becomes guaranteed. Smith has turned into something of a hot commodity because the quarterback pool in free agency and the draft is shallow.
But Smith also became an afterthought on the 49ers' roster, following the explosion of second-year pro Colin Kaepernick. It's not out of the realm of possibilitiy that San Francisco hangs on to Smith, though it seems unlikely.
Smith and his wife met with Baalke after the Super Bowl, with both sides discussing what they thought about the situation. The trade window opens March 12, but Baalke said Thursday that the team is in no rush.
"There's no timetable put on making a decision, one way or the other," Baalke said. "Obviously, we want to do what's in the best interest of both parties. And I think we are very much on the same page. The discussion we had is a private discussion."
