Bucs' 24-man coaching staff could be biggest ever assembled

The Buccaneers will be getting plenty of instruction this fall.

For a 53-man roster, coach Greg Schiano has assembled a 24-man coaching staff, believed to be the biggest in NFL history. The staff includes three strength and conditioning coaches, a pass rush specialist, an assistant defensive coordinator and a special teams assistant.

Tampa has one coach more than the 23-man staffs with the Eagles, Seahawks and Vikings.

"I think it's always a fluid situation," Schiano told the Tampa Bay Times. "Do you always need to have a staff as large as we do? Maybe not down the road. But the people we have in place right now are all people that I trust and believe in.

"And they all have a function or a role. And as those roles change, then our staff will change. But right now, I feel very good about our staff."

Several staff members worked with Schiano at Rutgers.

After going 7-9 in Schiano's first season, the Bucs hired Rutgers linebackers coach Robb Smith to coach linebackers and moved 2012 linebackers coach Bob Fraser to a new position called assistant defensive coordinator. Fraser was Rutgers' defensive coordinator from 2009-11.

Other newcomers include Dave Wannstedt (special teams coordinator), John McNulty (quarterbacks) and John Garrett (receivers).

"I'm really excited about our staff," Schiano told the paper. "Last year I knew … it wasn't going to be exactly right and there were going to be some growing pains. I think my job is to sit back, evaluate and do what I think makes our football team better. That's what we did."
