Redskins general manager Bruce Allen confirmed what had been a foregone conclusion for some time in announcing Baylor quarterback Robert Griffin III will be Washington's choice with the No. 2 overall pick tonight.
The remaining shred of uncertainly about where the Heisman Trophy winner would end up was removed earlier this week when Colts general manager Ryan Grigson confirmed Indianapolis will take Stanford quarterback
"The exciting part about what we were able to do was we fell in love with both quarterbacks," Allen said on the NFL Network on Thursday. "We knew we wanted to move up. The Colts didn't want to make a trade and the Rams having a franchise quarterback allowed us to pinpoint the No. 2 spot. But it's not just this year for either one of those quarterbacks; it's the body of work that they accomplished in college football, it's what we found out about them as individuals that really set them apart from everybody that we had graded in this draft."
Allen said Luck and Griffin III both have "terrific talent," but added that RG3 "fits our offense to a tee."
Washington forked over a big bounty to acquire the No. 2 overall pick last month, sending St. Louis the No. 6 overall pick tonight, two future first-round picks and a second-round pick.
