2013 NFL Combine: 40 record safe as McCalebb's time bumped down
The 40-yard dash record at the scouting combine survived another serious test Sunday when Onterio McCalebb's 4.21 time was changed to 4.34.
INDIANAPOLIS -- Trindon Holliday can breathe a sigh of relief. His 4.21-second 40-yard dash in 2010 remains the fastest time at the scouting combine since 2000 -- but the mark had to survive an assault from a deep class of speed burners inside Lucas Oil Stadium on Sunday.
After former Olympian Marquise Goodwin, the Texas wide receiver, posted a 4.27 in the morning, Auburn running back Onterio McCalebb was credited with an unofficial 4.21 on his second attempt in the afternoon -- putting Holliday's record in peril. But when the final results were released, McCalebb was bumped down to 4.34, tying him with wide receivers Tavon Austin (West Virginia) and Ryan Swope (Texas A&M) for the second-fastest time of the day.
McCalebb's unofficial time quickly appeared to be on the fast side when NFL Network showed a "simulcam" overlaying McCalebb and Goodwin, and Goodwin crossed the finish ahead of McCalebb, obviously an indication the Olympian and Longhorns product was faster.
Holliday ran a 4.21 in 2010, when Jacoby Ford (Clemson, Oakland Raiders) posted a 4.22, the two fastest times since 2000, according to NFLDraftScout.com records. Chris Johnson (East Carolina, Tennessee Titans) is widely credited with the event record at 4.24 seconds. So-called official times aren't released to teams until a week or 10 days after the event.
McCalebb was sidelined at the Senior Bowl because of a hamstring injury. He weighed 164 pounds at 5-feet-10 at that event and is considered a one-trick pony with potential as a third-down back and return specialist because of his home-run speed.
