2014 NFL combine results: Bench Press (Linebackers)

INDIANAPOLIS -- The bench press is one of the Combine's most popular events but it is important to remember that it tests strength and endurance, rather than the explosiveness often more important when actually playing the game. Further, just due to physics, players with longer arms are at a disadvantage compared to their shorter-armed peers in this drill. As such, gaudy numbers in the bench press aren't necessarily a true reflection of the top players.

Because of their relatively long arms, scouts may appreciate the weight room proficieny of Buffalo's Khalil Mack (33 1/4-inch arms) and Stanford's Trent Murphy (33 7/8) every bit as much as shorter-armed linebackers like Wisconsin's Chris Borland (29 1/4) even though they lifted the bar fewer times. Cal's Khairi Fortt, who has 33 5/8-inch arms, had a very impressive showing with 30 reps on the 225-pound bench press.

One example of where the bench press numbers do actually raise some red-flags is with UCLA superstar Anthony Barr , who finished dead last among linebackers with just 15 reps. Barr possesses very long arms (33 1/2) and made the switch from running back just two years ago but the low weight room production provides some quantitative evidence of his finesse rather than physical style of play.
